Project Overview
The New Dawn Foundation Youth Empowerment Center is the flagship project of New Dawn Foundation, established in 2021 to provide practical skills and livelihood opportunities to young people, particularly women, girls, and conflict-affected internally displaced persons (IDPs).
Through the Center, New Dawn Foundation offers free vocational training in sewing and fashion design, as well as hairdressing, equipping young people with practical skills that enable them to pursue employment, establish their own businesses, and build sustainable livelihoods.
The initiative responds to the economic and social challenges faced by young people affected by conflict and displacement, many of whom have limited access to education, employment, and income-generating opportunities.
Background and Rationale
The ongoing Anglophone conflict in Cameroon has disrupted livelihoods, displaced families, and created significant barriers to education and employment for young people. Women and girls affected by conflict often face increased economic vulnerability, limited access to vocational training, and reduced opportunities to become self-reliant.
Recognizing the importance of practical skills in poverty alleviation and community resilience, New Dawn Foundation established the Youth Empowerment Center as a space where young people can acquire marketable vocational skills in a supportive and inclusive environment.
The Center was founded on the belief that empowering young people with practical knowledge and skills can contribute to:

Project Objectives
The primary objective of the New Dawn Foundation Youth Empowerment Center is to empower young people with practical vocational and entrepreneurial skills that enable them to achieve sustainable livelihoods.
Specifically, the project aims to:
- Provide free vocational training opportunities for young women, girls, and conflict-affected youth.
- Equip trainees with practical skills in sewing, fashion design, and hairdressing.
- Improve the employability and economic independence of young people.
- Support internally displaced persons in integrating into host communities through livelihood opportunities.

Training Programmes
Sewing and Fashion Design Training
The sewing and fashion design programme is a comprehensive one-year vocational training course designed to provide trainees with practical and professional skills in garment production and fashion design.
During the programme, trainees are introduced to the fundamentals of sewing, garment construction, fashion design, and other practical aspects of the tailoring profession.
The structured one-year training programme enables participants to develop sufficient competence to pursue employment, establish their own tailoring businesses, or continue advancing their professional skills after graduation.
At the end of the programme, successful trainees graduate with practical skills that can provide a foundation for sustainable income generation.
Hairdressing Training
The Center also offers free hairdressing training designed to introduce young women and girls to the fundamentals of hair care and beauty services.
The hairdressing programme runs for approximately three months and focuses on practical foundational skills that enable trainees to begin offering services and developing their own income-generating activities.
The programme provides an accessible entry point into vocational training for young people seeking practical skills within a relatively short period.
Target Beneficiaries
The Youth Empowerment Center primarily targets:
- Young women and girls.
- Internally displaced persons affected by conflict.
- Young people from vulnerable households.
- Unemployed and underemployed youth.
- Individuals with limited access to formal education or vocational opportunities.
Priority is given to individuals who demonstrate genuine need and potential to benefit from vocational training.
Community-Based Selection and Mobilization
New Dawn Foundation works closely with local community stakeholders to identify and select beneficiaries for the programme.
Community leaders play an important role in mobilizing potential beneficiaries, identifying vulnerable young people, and supporting the selection process.
The Foundation also consults existing community databases of registered internally displaced persons to ensure that the programme reaches individuals who are most in need of livelihood support.
This community-based approach promotes transparency, local ownership, and meaningful stakeholder participation throughout the implementation of the project.
Project Achievements and Impact
Since becoming operational in 2021, the New Dawn Foundation Youth Empowerment Center has made a meaningful contribution to youth empowerment and livelihood development in the community.
To date, the Center has trained and graduated 52 young women and girls through its sewing and fashion design programme.
The Center currently accommodates a maximum of approximately ten trainees per year for the sewing and fashion design programme due to the limited number of sewing machines and available training resources.
Despite these limitations, the project continues to demonstrate the transformative potential of vocational education and practical skills development.
Graduates of the programme have acquired skills that enable them to:
- Seek employment in the fashion and tailoring sector.
- Establish and manage their own businesses.
- Generate income for themselves and their families.
- Improve their economic independence.
- Contribute to household livelihoods.
- Integrate more effectively into their host communities.
The project represents an investment not only in individual beneficiaries but also in families and communities, as empowered young people become contributors to local economic and social development.
Future Plans: From Training to Sustainable Livelihoods
New Dawn Foundation recognizes that vocational training alone may not always be sufficient to guarantee sustainable livelihoods.
For this reason, the Foundation is developing plans to strengthen post-training support for graduates.
Future interventions will focus on providing selected graduates with:
- Start-up materials and equipment.
- Financial support or seed capital.
- Business mentorship and coaching.
- Guidance on enterprise development.
- Continued professional support after graduation.
The Foundation also intends to establish a mentorship and knowledge-sharing model through which graduates will be encouraged to train at least two other young people each year, free of charge, as part of a community-based approach to skills transfer and sustainability.
This model will help multiply the impact of the Youth Empowerment Center beyond the number of trainees directly supported by the Foundation.
By encouraging graduates to become trainers and mentors, New Dawn Foundation seeks to create a cycle of empowerment in which beneficiaries become agents of change within their own communities.

The success of the New Dawn Foundation Youth Empowerment Center depends significantly on collaboration with local authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
