Healthy Futures Youth Champions Clubs

Short website summary

Healthy Futures Youth Champions Clubs are the next phase of New Dawn Foundation’s youth health and leadership initiative. Building on the training of 26 Youth Champions from six communities in Buea Municipality, the initiative will establish community-led clubs that provide safe spaces for young people to access information on sexual and reproductive health, menstrual health and hygiene, healthy choices, wellbeing and leadership. The first club will be launched in Liongo, followed by expansion to the other participating communities. Communities will lead and coordinate the clubs, while New Dawn Foundation will provide ongoing supervision, mentoring, technical support and guidance to strengthen their sustainability.

Launching Community-Led Safe Spaces for Youth Health, Learning and Leadership

Following the successful completion of the Healthy Futures Youth Champions: Menstrual Dignity, Leadership and Community Action training, New Dawn Foundation is preparing for the next phase of the initiative: the launch of Healthy Futures Youth Champions Clubs across six communities in the Buea Municipality.

The clubs will build on the foundation created through the training of 26 youth champions and peer educators aged 13–17, drawn from six communities. The next phase will bring the learning closer to young people by creating safe, inclusive and community-led spaces where adolescents can access reliable information, learn from one another, build leadership skills and take part in activities that promote healthy choices and wellbeing.

Why the Youth Champions Clubs?

The training phase demonstrated the value of combining accurate health information with practical skills, peer learning, creativity and community problem-solving. It also created a group of trained young people who can contribute to continued peer education and community action.

The Youth Champions Clubs are designed to take this work one step further.

Rather than keeping the project centered around one-off training sessions, the clubs will create ongoing community spaces where young people can continue learning, discussing issues that affect their wellbeing, sharing experiences and connecting with appropriate support.

The clubs will provide opportunities for young people to receive age-appropriate information and participate in discussions and activities around:

  • Sexual and reproductive health education
  • Menstrual health and menstrual hygiene management
  • Healthy and informed health choices
  • Youth wellbeing and dignity
  • Peer education and leadership
  • Community problem-solving and action

The clubs will also create opportunities for the trained Youth Champions to put their new knowledge and leadership skills into practice as peer educators and mobilisers.

A Community-Led Model

At the heart of the initiative is community ownership.

Each Youth Champions Club will be coordinated and supported within its local community, allowing community members and young people to have an active role in shaping the club’s activities and ensuring that it responds to local needs.

New Dawn Foundation will not operate the clubs as structures owned solely by the organisation. Instead, the Foundation will provide ongoing supervision, mentoring, technical guidance and quality support, while communities take increasing responsibility for the day-to-day continuity of the clubs.

This approach reflects New Dawn Foundation’s commitment to developing sustainable community structures that can continue beyond the initial project period. The previous project report recommends that local stakeholders contribute to community endorsement, mobilisation, meeting spaces, safeguarding and links to referral services, while youth champions contribute peer education, facilitation, mobilisation, documentation and leadership.

Starting in Liongo

The first Youth Champions Club will be launched in Liongo, marking the beginning of the planned rollout across the six participating communities.

The Liongo launch will provide an opportunity to introduce the club model, bring together young people and relevant community stakeholders, establish the local leadership and coordination arrangements, and begin developing a regular programme of youth-focused activities.

Lessons from the first club will help New Dawn Foundation and community partners strengthen and adapt the model before extending it to the remaining communities.

From Training to Local Action

The club model is a direct continuation of the work already started through the Youth Champions training.

During the training, participants learned about menstrual health and hygiene, reusable sanitary pads, menstrual-cycle tracking, teamwork, creativity and problem-solving. They were also introduced to approaches for identifying community challenges and developing practical solutions.

The clubs will provide a platform for that knowledge to move beyond the training room and into communities.

Youth Champions will have opportunities to support peer learning, facilitate conversations, mobilise other young people and contribute to locally relevant activities. Community leaders, health workers, schools, women’s groups, faith-community stakeholders and other partners can also contribute to creating a supportive environment around the clubs.

Our Approach to Sustainability

Sustainability will be built into the club model from the beginning.

New Dawn Foundation will provide the technical support and supervision needed to maintain quality, safeguarding and learning, while communities will help lead and sustain the clubs. Youth Champions will serve as a key resource for peer education and mobilisation, and local stakeholders will be encouraged to support the clubs with community engagement, safe meeting spaces and appropriate referral connections.

The Foundation will also encourage simple documentation of club activities, participation, feedback, issues referred and lessons learned. This will help the project understand what is working, identify areas for improvement and strengthen the model as it expands across the six communities.

Our Vision

Healthy Futures Youth Champions Clubs are more than meeting spaces—they are community platforms for learning, leadership and action.

Through these clubs, New Dawn Foundation seeks to support communities where young people can access reliable health information, discuss sensitive issues without shame, develop leadership and decision-making skills, and participate in creating solutions to challenges affecting their wellbeing.

Starting with Lyongo, the initiative will lay the foundation for a network of community-led Youth Champions Clubs across six communities in Buea Municipality.
